Day 29 - đź‘Ł Final Steps
2023-06-04

Brecht, Pierre, José-Luis and Olivier are beginning their final day of progression on their amazing Greenland icecap traverse. If all goes as planned, they will advance throughout Sunday to their final destination where they will establish the final campsite of their grand adventure. The exact spot of the finish will soon be determined near the chosen GPS point at a suitable helicopter landing site. Weather conditions dependent, we hope to have them picked up from the icecap early tomorrow morning.

The finish of any long adventure requires a unique type of patience and stamina, both physical and mental. After 29 days on the ice, everyone senses the pending excitement and joy that success brings, but they're not there yet. The final days demand a keen focus that becomes teased by ever-increasing views of the distant mountains and - as of yesterday - the glistening ocean on Greenland's east coast. Complacency may not enter the safety equation.

Three days ago, for example, our team crossed relatively fresh polar bear tracks that were moving perpendicular to them in a northerly direction. While our adventurers continued east, they found themselves naturally on a heightened alert status. They were of course prepared for such an encounter, yet the humility triggered by the impressive paw prints was genuine. Thankfully, they never crossed paths again nor ever caught sight of the magnificent creature.

Everyone continues to be in excellent spirits and the weather so far is cooperating with them.

As soon as we have more news about their safe pickup - and more importantly of a well-deserved celebration - we'll update you here and also at Expeditions Unlimited.
