Fickle Conditions
2025-03-15

An unusually powerful storm system battered southwest Greenland in the past week, one that resulted in substantial air traffic delays and chaotic supply deliveries. As a result, the region around the Arctic Circle Trail has experienced rapidly changing and completely unpredictable conditions. In particular, after several days with warm temperatures that reached +8° C, our team was forced to redirect their expedition activities away from the Arctic Circle Trail due to lack of snow and prohibitive melt conditions.

Nature's fickle behaviour has of course left our participants frustrated and ultimately confused, yet they were treated to a reminder of its splendour with a stunning Northern Lights show last night.

After taking time to regroup back in Kangerlussuaq, Brecht and the team headed out on Friday to explore the area around the majestic Russel Glacier, approximately 25 kilometres east of Kangerlussuaq. Temperatures were also reported to be dropping back to relatively normal conditions for this time of year at around -13°C.

It has been adventure in the purest sense of the word for our resilient team so far on this expedition. We'll continue to follow their activities here on our blog and also at Expeditions Unlimited with their LiveExplorer tracking feature.
